FOLKLORE SOCIETY - EVENTS + RETAIL SPACE | 1st YEAR - 8 WEEK PROJECT

BRIEF

Investigate + develop a proposal that imbues folklore and tales of the Eastend within a retail and events space, designed for the Folklore society, in Raven Row.

The Folklore Society - a group devoted to the study of traditional culture in all its forms. Aiming to foster the research + documentation of folklore worldwide + to make the results of such study available to all, whether members of the Society or not.

Raven Row - currently an art gallery refurbished in 2008 - 2009. An open space + blank canvas but that reflects its Huguenot history.

CONCEPT

USE OF SPACE

Learn | Teach about poverty + homelessness

Conversation | Bring awareness to how we can help and encourage visitors to sit and talk

Interaction | Visitors leave their mark on the space and take away memories of their experience - Postcards will be given on entering (possibly for a donation) to then draw + build on, leaving them behind at the exhibition

FEEL OF SPACE

Hierarchy | High + low spaces

Materials | Cardboard - used widely by the homeless as easily available + insulating - used on mass to accentuate + Cast iron - historic to building + strong, opposite of flimsy cardboard - looking to future
