PETTICOAT LANE MARKET - REGENERATION | SUMMER - 4 WEEK PROJECT
BRIEF
Working with Tower Hamlets Council + Steer Group to explore the history of the market, address the challenges it faces in competition with neighbouring Spitalfields Market to redefine it’s identity + encourage visitor numbers
CHALLENGES/OBJECTIVES
Cluttered streets with a lot going on in terms of signs and street furniture so any new designs will need to compete to stand out
Changing use of street
Low quality of products being sold so fewer visitors drawn in than some other markets - Local residents do shop here though so need to be careful not to alienate
Food stalls present on Mon-Fri market seem very popular but not very many on the busier Sunday market - Need to encourage more to attend as well as possibly more fresh produce stalls
CONCEPT
Identity motif that shows the diverse cultural makeup of the local area
Re-design of street lamps establishing a new market identity
New street signs reinforcing the market identity + easing navigation
Bench seating placed amongst market stalls encouraging social interaction
Colourful decorative murals placed on building facades telling to stories of the local history + their cultures
Book + artwork box stalls - installed on walls + closable when market not open
Colourful crossing - encouraging market visitors to continue exploring stalls on other side of main road
